Donations by QR code

Collect donations with a QR code

Raising money for your church, your club, a school trip, a funeral or a community project? Wear a Tip Me badge or put it on the table. People scan its QR code with their own phone and give by card, PayShap or instant EFT, or free from their own TapAPI wallet. The money lands in your TapAPI wallet. Nothing to install, on either side.

How it works

From scan to donation

Three steps, all on the giver’s own phone.

Get a badge

A Tip Me badge is R35 once. Delivery to a PAXI point is R59.95, or get one from a TapAPI shop. Open the packet and scan the QR code inside to link the badge to your TapAPI wallet.

People scan it

Their phone camera reads the QR code on your badge and TapAPI’s payment page opens in their browser. No app to download and no code to type in.

The money lands in your wallet

They give by card, PayShap or instant EFT, or free from their own TapAPI wallet. Card and bank details stay on TapAPI’s page and are never given to you.

What it costs

R35 once. TapAPI takes no cut.

The badge

A Tip Me badge is R35 once. Delivery to a PAXI point is R59.95, or get one from a TapAPI shop. There is no monthly fee. Order a Tip Me badge.

Each payment

A payment from a TapAPI wallet costs nothing. On PayShap, bank or card TapAPI takes no cut: only the payment’s own cost comes off, which on R100 is R1.15 by PayShap, R1.73 by bank or R3.28 by card, unless the person giving ticks the box to cover it. What a payment costs.

Good to know

Before you start collecting

The page says tip

The payment page behind the badge is TapAPI’s tip page, so it asks for a tip. Tell people what you are collecting for: a word, or a poster beside the badge, is enough.

Or a wristband to tap

A TapAPI wristband works the same way as the badge: the person giving taps it with their own phone instead of scanning a code.

Using the money

Spend it at any TapAPI shop with a tap and your PIN, buy airtime, data and electricity, or send it to your bank once your ID is verified: R2.88 by PayShap or R5.18 by RTC EFT.

Your PIN guards it

Anyone can give with the badge, but paying from your wallet always needs your PIN. Nobody may ever ask you for it.

Collect honestly

Collect only for a cause you are part of, and tell people what the money is for.

No tax certificates

TapAPI does not issue section 18A tax certificates for donations.

For groups

Collecting as a group

A wallet can have one badge, so each collector wears a badge on their own wallet. When the collecting is done, collectors send what came in to the treasurer’s wallet: wallet to wallet costs nothing. Each collector needs their own TapAPI wallet, which opens free on a cell number.
