Tipping without cash

No cash on you? Tip with your phone

Car guards, petrol attendants and waiters still work for tips, but fewer of us carry coins. If the person who helped you wears a Tip Me badge or a TapAPI wristband, tip them from the phone in your pocket: scan the badge’s QR code or tap the wristband, choose an amount and pay. No app to install.

Choose the tip

A TapAPI payment page opens in your browser. Choose how much to tip.

Who you can tip

Tip the people who help you every day

Car guards

Tip from the driver’s seat without searching the car for coins.

Petrol attendants

Thank the attendant who checked the oil and tyres, even when you paid for the fuel by card.

Waiters and bar staff

Tip the person who served you, separately from the bill.

Delivery riders

Tip at the door, even when the order was paid online.

Hair and beauty

Tip your stylist, barber or nail technician.

Buskers and street artists

Tip the performer when you have no change on you.

What it costs you

TapAPI takes no cut of your tip

By card, PayShap or bank

TapAPI adds nothing. The payment’s own cost comes off the tip the worker receives, unless you tick the box to cover it so that they get the full tip. What a tip costs.

From a TapAPI wallet

Free. Wallet to wallet costs nothing, on either side, and a TapAPI wallet is free to open on your cell number. Open a free wallet.

Why it matters

A tip is worth more than it looks

Digital tipping has raised car guards’ and fuel attendants’ takings by as much as 40%, with an average tip of about R30 (TopAuto, EWN). For a worker on the national minimum wage of R30.23 an hour, one R30 tip is about an hour’s pay. The figures and their sources.

Questions

Common questions

Do I need an app to tip?

No. Your phone’s camera reads the QR code on the badge, or the phone reads the wristband with a tap, and a payment page opens in the browser.

Do I need a TapAPI wallet to tip?

No. Anyone can tip by card, PayShap or instant EFT. If you have a free TapAPI wallet, tipping from it costs nothing.

Is it safe to pay by card?

Your card and bank details are typed only on TapAPI’s payment page and are never given to the person you tip.

How much of my tip does the worker get?

All of it except the payment’s own cost: TapAPI takes no cut. Tick the box to cover that cost and they get at least the full tip. What a tip costs.

What if they have no badge?

Tell them about it. A Tip Me badge is R35, delivered to a PAXI point or from a TapAPI shop, and a TapAPI wallet is free. If you have a TapAPI wallet and are the first to bring someone to TapAPI, you earn a reward every time they buy electricity, airtime or data from their wallet, for as long as they use it. What you can earn.

What can the worker do with the tip?

Spend it at any TapAPI shop with a tap and their PIN, buy airtime, data, electricity and vouchers, send money to family, or send it to a bank account once their ID is verified.
